a subdued history
June 1921
Black Man Stands Amidst Burnt Property Completely Reduced to Ashes Total Loss for Greenwood Residents
Residents returned to their properties to find nothing left. Insurance companies refused to honor the claims of black people due to riot clauses and rebuilding had to be done with no help from the city, which stymied any legal attempts to make the black residents of Greenwood "whole again." Additionally, no white people were ever charged with any crimes for their participation in the massacre which led to an austere environment of uneasiness where the black residents of Greenwood lived in fear that the assault could happen again.
